In Briancon, to the northeast of the newer district of Ste-Catherine, built on the slopes above the valley, is the old town or Ville Haute with its triple circuit of walls. The church of Notre-Dame (1718) was also designed by Vauban.

 

The Old City is the oldest part of Briancon, and is one of the best places to visit first when you arrive in the mountain village. The delicious narrow streets and winding take a visitor on a magical journey through the past, passing intact houses and streets that look like they can’t keep up with the framework of the 21st century. The Grand-Rue is a fantastic glance, filled with water and fountains that gush through the heart of the old city.
